A few minutes prior to the end of the high school and middle school day on Monday, April 15, 2024, the building’s alarm system detected “smoke” from one of the elementary building’s sensors. All employees cleared the building per normal protocol and supervised students outdoors until the West Milton Fire Department arrived. The alert was not expected and can, therefore, not be considered or assumed to be a drill.
While waiting for emergency services, school staff members identified the sensor and reason for the alarm. The elementary school planned a motivational event for students to positively prepare them for spring testing. The student “parade” was planned with decorations, announcements, and even a fog machine for effect. Unfortunately, the fog machine tripped a sensor. Because the fog machine had been used previously for other events, building staff members had no indication there would be an issue with the alarm system.
Once the West Milton Fire Department was on-site to inspect the scene and cause, school employees were given permission to reenter the building. Middle and high school students returned to their last period classes for attendance just prior to dismissal. Elementary students returned to their afternoon activities, and at this time, the transportation department does not anticipate any delays with student drop-off.
We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion. If you have any questions, please contact your building’s main office. You may also contact the Board of Education Office with questions.
Thank you!
